The Fenix LD01 Q5 LED flashlight is a perfect personal flashlight. Measuring just under 3" long the Fenix LD01 easily fits in your pocket and can be attached to your keychain. Operation of Fenix LD01 with Cree Q5 LED:
Turn the head of the flashlight clockwise for on. A counter clockwise turn will then switch it off. To switch between brightness levels, turn the flashlight on then off. Within 1.5 seconds after being turned off, twist the head on again and it will be switched to the next brightness level. Sequence of output levels: Medium > Low > High.

The Fenix LD01 is without doubt the most versatile and best engineered 1 AAA battery flashlight on the market, and has been since it was introduced a few years ago.

It uses the highly advanced and extremely efficient CREE XP-G LED module, and a digitally controlled driver circuit that gives this small light 3 well chosen and easily accessed levels of light output, to match your specific need, each time you use it.

This small flashlight is designed to be carried on your key chain, so it's always with you, but it also comes with a very nice pocket clip, so you can clip it to your shirt or pants pocket, or it can be easily carried in any pocket or purse.

It is perfect as an EDC flashlight: an everyday carry flashlight. It is just 3 inches long, and slightly over a half inch in diameter. It's small, but not so tiny that it's hard to use.

It weighs just under an ounce, with a common AAA alkaline battery. It's small, but versatile and powerful.

The rotary head on-off switch and light level selector is immune from unintentional activation, no matter how it is carried, so you will never go to use it and find it has a dead battery.

The flashlight is turned on by simply tightening the head, clockwise. It comes on in Medium, the most commonly used setting for most people. Selecting another light level is done by turning the flashlight off, and then on again.

The LD01 follows the sequence Medium -> Low -> High. It always turns on in the Medium setting, if it has been turned off for several seconds.

The medium setting is perfect for finding keyholes in the dark. I usually carry mine on my key chain, on a short loop of nylon cord, so I can hold the LD01 up by the keyhole, and put the key in the keyhole at the same time.

Using a single common and inexpensive alkaline AAA battery, from Energizer, Duracell, EverReady and Rayovac, I got the following average run times:

Medium 2.5 hr. 26 lumens
Low 29 hr. 3 lumens
High 1hr. 72 lumens

A rechargeable NiMH battery, or a lithium AAA battery will give somewhat longer run times, on High or Medium, but they are relatively expensive, compared to the common alkaline batteries, which can be purchased for as little as 25 cents.

I have found the Low setting is ideal for low light tasks such as finding dropped keys or other items in a movie theater, or finding the latrine at night while camping. It is also plenty bright for reading, while not disturbing other people trying to sleep in the same tent or room.

When I want to go right to the Low setting, without flashing the the room with the bright Medium setting, I cover the lens with my finger, turn the LD01 on, off, and on again, take my finger off the lens, and it's on the Low setting, ready to go.

The High setting, at 72 lumens, is really REALLY bright, especially from such a small flashlight.

The first truly tactical flashlight, designed expressly for police and military use, produced 65 lumens, from 2 expensive 3 volt lithium CR123 cells, for one hour, using a xenon incandescent bulb, with a lifespan of just 20 hours.

The small Fenix LD01 produces the same amount of light, from a flashlight a tiny fraction of the size, from a tiny AAA battery, costing a tiny fraction of the cost of two lithium CR123 cells. And the LED module will never need to be replaced: it has a lifespan of 50,000 hours.

An LED flashlight such as this excellent Fenix LD01 costs more up front than cheap incandescent flashlights, but it is vastly more versatile, has much, much longer battery life, and is built for many, many years of use.

It even comes with a spare O-ring in the package, in the unlikely event that you wear out the original O-ring installed in the flashlight. It is water resistant, and shock resistant.

I couldn't begin to count how many times I've dropped my keys, with the Fenix LD01 attached. It doesn't seem to matter: the Fenix LD01 just keeps on working, the same as the day I first turned it on.

The Fenix LD01 is far and away the nicest small flashlight I've ever owned. I have given several to people as gifts, and they have all been amazed at it's features, battery life, and how bright it is. I highly recommend it.

I am a big fan of 1xAAA pocket lights, and have several of them. However, day after day (or should I say "night after night"?), I find myself reaching for the Fenix LD01. It is simply the best all around AAA light I've found.

The LD01 is actually a bit larger than most of my AAA lights, but I have found this makes it a bit easier to get a grip on. It has a beautiful floody beam with no artifacts and an excellent neutral tint. The twist action has the perfect amount of resistance, and the band of knurling on the head provides a good grip. Runtime is good, and output on medium is plenty for most needs, with high providing a real blast, and low useful when you just need a bit of light. I tailstand my AAA lights frequently and the LD01 excells at that---very sturdy.

All in all, you can't go wrong with the LD01.

I've had this little flashlight for a couple of years and keep it on my key chain. It's such a nice size and gives off great light when it works. But, about four months after I got it, I couldn't get it to work. The maker suggested cleaning with alcohol which did nothing. My husband came up with a fix using aluminum foil that works at least some of the time. For the price, I think it should be more reliable.

I bought this flashlight for my husband for Christmas a couple years ago. He has never gotten anything he likes better. Since he is so paranoid he will lose the flashlight, I'm ordering another one for Christmas, just in case. Also ordering two more for gifts.
