Rating:

Fenix has become one of my favorite flashlight companies. They consistently offer compact, bright, versatile lights at a reasonable cost. The PD32 continues this tradition. It is well made and has a quality, yet lightweight feel.

The PD32 has four well-spaced levels of light that should make this light suitable for a variety of lighting situations. (Case in point: I intend to try this for lighting up a parachute canopy on nightjumps, also for seeing into the dark corners while servicing pipe organs.) The brightest level is amazing, retina-searing bright - the brightest I've seen in a light this size. The strobe is very fast and at full brightness - at night it would probably stop a charging bear (not verified experimentally, so don't try this at home). Seriously, be very careful with the high brightness levels of this light - I wouldn't be surprised if it could cause permanent vision damage; the strobe could certainly mess up your head and vision for some time (made me dizzy just testing it for a few seconds). Never point it into anyone's eyes, this is not a toy.

The beam has a well-defined hot-spot with good side spill. There are some minor artifacts in the hot spot (a faint "bulls eye") but it is certainly not distracting, just not as even as previous Fenix lights I've owned. If you like a softer, less defined beam, a small piece of scotch tape over the lens evens it out nicely. (This useful trick works on most any LED light or lantern.)

One big difference in this light is the way you select light levels. The tailcap switch, which has a firm, positive feel, only turns the light on and off (also has a momentary on position). The brightness levels, strobe and SOS functions are set with a slightly raised rubber covered switch on the head of the light. This is a nice feature, especially if you normally just use one brightness - you can set it and forget it. It always comes on in the last level you used.

Unlike some other lights, you can't set the PD32 on its tailcap to use as a "candle". The head is scalloped so if you set it down this way, you can still see that it is on. One minor complaint: the batteries have a slightly loose fit in the barrel and rattle. I remedied this by wrapping an 11" strip of copy paper around the batteries.

I highly recommend this light; I don't think you will be disappointed.
