Petzl TAC Tikka PLUS

The Petzl TACTikka PLUS alternates easily between white and red light simply by moving the pivoting filter over the LEDs - 35 lumen model.

Compact design incorporating 4 white LED's. Tilting head and push button on/off make for easy operation. The Petzl TACTikka Plus has 3 power levels and one strobe mode. One click of the push button gives you maximum brightness. Another click after two seconds turns the light off. To select other power levels just continue clicking to cycle through high, medium, low, and strobe modes. After a 2 second delay the light turns off with one additional click.

This is a great all-around headlamp. It doesn't have the narrow, focused long-distance throw of the high power LEDs, but typically will last longer on a set of batteries. As it says, the new models have greatly improved light output from the ones several years back. These are surprisingly bright and perfectly adequate for night hiking or setting up camp after dark, usually even on one of the lower settings. The red filter is a nice feature for astronomy; my only complaint is that even on the dimmest setting, it is really too bright for reading star charts up close. Probably adding some red cellophane to the filter would improve this. Otherwise I highly recommend this light.
