Streamlight Super Tac
Flashlight Review*
by Bill Kincaid
|
Introduction |
When I first looked at the Streamlight Super Tac I think I curled my lip and shook my head. It definitely didn’t look like the conventional flashlight. I honestly thought it could pass as a dinner bell, and was not looking forward to reviewing it. However, during the course of this review I began to change my mind. The performance of this flashlight was extraordinary, and is reflected during the course of my testing.

I don’t have a light meter but based on my tests the light emitted is at least 135 lumens as stated. It is surprisingly bright and easily out throws flashlights having 175, 200, even 230 specified lumens. The head that I so quickly curled a lip at is now bringing a smile to my face. It produces a blinding beam of white light that easily targets 600 feet away. Streamlight has designed an LED flashlight that not only produced a laser beam of a spot, but has also done it with plenty of bright spill. Based on this factor alone, this light will become part of my arsenal of illumination tools..

The switch is a forward click type with momentary on. It is located on the end of the tail cap. I found the Super Tac switch had a nice medium-firm resistance to it when clicking on, and a very soft resistance for the momentary on. The tail cap can be un-screwed ¼ turn to lock the light out and prevent accidental activation.

Summary: |
The two parts of this flashlight I could improve upon would first be the polycarbonate lens with scratch resistant coating. A Pyrex or mineral glass lens would be much more durable in my opinion, but might be cost or weight prohibitive because of its size. Only time will tell if this material with scratch resistant coating will hold up to rugged use. The second would be a lower mode for general use around 40-60 lumens and 10 to 12 hours of run time. However, if ever the old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover” was appropriate, it would have to be now. The Super Tac does look different than any other LED flashlight on the market, but that’s because it performs different than any other LED flashlight on the market. It is listed at 135 lumens and out throws every flashlight in its class.
For the professional or anyone needing a flashlight that can illuminate objects hundreds of feet away, and with enough side spill to light the path ahead of them, I can highly recommend the Streamlight Super TAC. It is also made to be used, with its rugged aluminum body and head, deep knurling, and a nice looking black anodized finish. The LED should last a lifetime and has a limited lifetime warranty. At the time of this review the average street price was approximately $70.00, making this flashlight a fair bargain in my opinion.
