I bought this light to replace my P3D, which is/was my EDC. (Every Day Carry) I used the P3D several times a day, and loved it except for the too-smooth form factor. It also had nothing to keep it from rolling away. The quality and knurling is more Surefire like, but not as extreme. You can almost get injured handling a Surefire light with it's deep, spiky diamond knurls. (Just kidding) The knurling on the back section make it much easier to withdraw the PD30 from my Pock-It's belt pack. I had to add a stack of O-rings to the P3D to get something to grab onto.

So, I did a lot of comparing between the P3D and the new PD30. The length is slightly more, about 1/8 inch. I like the knurling for general gripping, which the P3D lacked. And, between the milled-in hexagon behind the head and the spring clip, the PD30 isn't going to roll away on you. (A major plus) The scalloped shape at the business end allows light to leak out, so you can see if it's on. If it gets set front face down, you won't forget it's on like the square ended P3D which seals in its output.

Beam. The PD30 has a lot more throw. Comparing the P3D and PD30 side by side on a wall 20 feet away, the PD30 has a well defined hot spot about 4 feet across. The P3D's fuzzy-edged hot spot is more than half again larger. The side spill is exactly the same. (Very wide, room filling in fact)

I used the P3D's "second bump" (53 lumens) the most. I am either inspecting something or working on something in dark TELCO closets. I really like the PD30's 75 lumen level better for this. It pretty much blasts anything close in, and of course, the ultra broad Cree spectrum can't be beat for ID'ing cable wire colors. In the old days, it was a toss up of whether a wire was yellow or green under a yellowish filament light. The Cree LED's have a nice color, much like daylight - no blue tint like older LED's.

The third level is only 20 lumens more than the P3D (140 vs. 120) but the tighter hot spot makes a big difference on seeing something a few yards away. It looks like more than 20 lumens brighter when comparing, mainly because of the tighter center beam. There are a few small artifacts in the PD30's center beam. The reflector is not dimpled like the P3D. You have to look for the artifacts though, they are minor. (Artifacts are dark spots, etc.) The new Cree element is much smaller, and has four narrow (fraction of a mm each) strips instead of one big phosphorous patch, and the artifacts may be from those four very close together light sources.

The turbo mode is HOLY COW bright. I tried it last night across my 270 foot wide yard. Nothing can hide from that much light. Same thing when aiming up into trees. The narrower and brighter hot spot makes it easier to see in foliage than the more spread out P3D. Funny there's no mention of a 10 minute time limit like the P3D had for turbo mode. The light heats up, but not all that much compared to the P3D on turbo mode. Fenix has done something to dissipate heat, obviously.

I couldn't possibly think of a better EDC light than the PD30. The lowest power level (11 lumens) is perfect for reading maps at night, finding your way around a tent while camping, etc. yet has enough light to rival the headlights of a car when needed to see what's rattling in the brush. The operation is the same as the P3D, and it's simple to use.

Excellent light. I ordered mine just before Thanksgiving weekend and got it Monday.

Light is strong and sturdy. It is very bright too. twice as bright as an incandescant.

It has three brightness settings and you can twist the front in any setting and get full bright. I also found a strobe setting in addition to the SOS setting. It shines way over 100 feet ahead of me.

The only knock I have is that you cant focus the beam, probably not an option with an LED that does not bounce the light off the back reflector.

Overall I am very happy.
