With 630 lumens maximum, the Fenix TK40 is the brightest flashlight powered by AA batteries available today. The Fenix TK40 gives you a total of 4 brightness modes ranging from 630 lumens to 13 lumens with respective run times of 2 hours and 150 hours. Switching of Fenix TK40:
Press the tailcap switch and release for constant on. Press the tailcap twice fast for flashing. (Note: each brightness level has an associated flashing mode; refer to the sequence of switching below.) To change brightness levels, from the off position, turn the TK40 on and release the tail switch. Then, press and hold the tailcap switch for more than 1 second to scroll to the next level. From any mode, press and release the switch for off. Press the tail switch again, and the TK40 will turn on in the last selected brightness level.

Sequence of Switching for the Fenix TK40:
1. Turbo: from this mode, rapidly press the switch twice for disorienting strobe
2. Low: rapidly press the switch twice for slow flashing
3. Medium: rapidly press the switch twice for SOS
4. High: rapidly press the switch twice for fast flashing

One thing is correct about any and all reviews (here and on the ‘net) is the fact that this light is BRIGHT. (Did I mention it’s cotton pickin’ BRIGHT?) The beam is perfectly even, and does reach waaaaay out there too. You can walk 500 feet away from someone holding the light, and easily read a newspaper.

I have a 3 D-cell Maglight with a 140 lumen Terralux conversion installed. By the TK40’s second level of brightness, it’s already starting to embarrass the converted Maglight. (We won’t even talk about a Maglight with a pathetic OEM bulb) The side spill is much wider from the TK40, and that lights up a large area the tighter Maglight beam misses. At about 175 feet away, the TK40 lights up a 30 foot circle with the main beam, and everything around to 75+ feet wide with the spill. It’s a nice beam to walk with or to search an area. (Dark yard, warehouse, etc.) The TK40’s light is also a lot ‘warmer’ looking than the cold blue Terralux conversion. It has a nice spectrum.

I have read a few reviews here and there with complaints about its size too. Oh, please. I was expecting something unwieldy after reading those reviews, but when it showed up in the UPS box, I found a light that’s over four inches shorter than a 3 D-cell Maglight, but otherwise has about the same form factor. People, this is NOT a pocket light… if you want a small, bright every day carry (EDC) light, then buy a Fenix P3D, Surefire P6, etc.

I’ve also read complaints about the way it operates. For me, it was very easy to figure out, and it works well. I really like how it ‘remembers’ what level it was on… there’s no ramping it back up thru the levels like a P3D. The switch is not a click on/off type, it’s a momentary click. So… to ramp up to the next level, you merely push in and hold the button down. The light will momentarily shut off, then restart in the next higher output level. (Takes about half a second) There’s no partially button pushing such as with a P3D. The light then turns on at that same level with any future use. Getting a strobe function is just double clicking the button like a computer mouse.

So far, I seldom use the full tilt Bozo output of 630 lumens. The third level of 277 lumens is more than enough to hose down an area the size of an auditorium with photons. Nothing/nobody can hide from that level of light within 100 yards with the TK40’s beam reach. The full output is handy for seeing what’s hiding in a forest tree line 250 yards away, but overkill for much less. (Other than the ‘wow factor’ when comparing lights with your buddies) Hitting a reflective road sign on full power will blind you. Turning the light off in a dark place after walking around on full power will make you stumble as your night vision is GONE, and you can see NOTHING.

The build quality is typical Fenix. I usually don’t like lights with battery carriers, but the AA holder in this light is high quality. There’s machined and black anodized aluminum rods with clear and easy to see laser etched markings for battery polarity alignment. The clear plastic end caps are twice as thick as the typical battery carrier in a cheap light. The carrier contacts appear to be gold plated.

The grip knurling is not deep and ‘spiky’ like a Surefire, but good enough for a secure grip. The case tube, head, and end cap threads are clean cut. (Low quality lights always seem to have been threaded by a machine with dull cutters) The TK40 is also a lot lighter than a 3 D-cell Maglight. The AA’s compared to heavier D’s might have something to do with it, especially with only a two battery length compared to three D cells stacked in the Maglight, so you won’t be using the TK40 for a billy club.

My only teeny-tiny complaint is that the head diameter is about 1/16 of an inch larger than a 3-D Maglight. That aces out using my slide-on red traffic wand with it. That’s not a big deal as I can just add a short tube or otherwise make an adaptor for the traffic wand attachment.
