W. from Houston gives it a 4 and says.. This is a superb light for the price. It has a decently bright high mode, a modest low mode, and two flashy modes I've never really used.
Possible applications include a toolbox light, an emergency car light (use lithium batteries though, as they will not leak), or a camping light. However, you probably don't want to use it in high stress situations, i.e. tactical light, because focusing the beam and changing modes takes some coordination. Furthermore, it’s probably not bright enough for that application.
Mine had a well-centered, neutral white beam, which was really nice for lighting up both indoors and outdoors. The center beam is quite narrow and throws a respectable distance. It is augmented by a wide corona. The spillbeam is narrow compared to that of other flashlights.
I’ve owned one of the original Maglite AA LED before, and this newer version has three improvements: a low mode, a more efficient LED, and improved heatsinking for the LED. If you turn the light on for about ten minutes, you can feel the head getting warm.
So far the light has held up well. I’ve had sparse reliability issues with the switch (skipping modes, etc), but they haven’t been that much of a problem. Examining the innards of the light, one can see that Mag continued using a simple design. All the electronics are contained in a stainless steel capsule. I hope this light is reliable as the original incandescent Mini-Maglite; it would make a good replacement.
