The Princeton Tec Blast runs on two AAA batteries. It is one of the smallest 2 AAA flashlights we sell(only the UK2AAA Mini Pocket is smaller). The Blast uses a xenon bulb/reflector assembly with a textured surface that produces a smooth and even beam. The Blast flashlight has a clip molded onto its body so it can be attached to a cap for hands free use or to a shirt or jacket pocket for easy access. The Blast runs for 3 hours on a fresh set of alkaline batteries. The flashlight is turned on/off by a rotation of the bezel. This little powerhouse delivers a surprising blast of light given its compact size. You will want to pick up several for key rings, backpacks, briefcases, and vehicle glove boxes. The convenient, built-in clip allows you to attach it to your hat for hands-free illumination, or to your belt or pocket for easy access. The Blast maintains waterproof integrity to 100 meters. The Princeton Tec Blast is available with custom imprinting - minimum 50 pcs. I. from Kuwait gives it a 3 and says.. I give this light three stars. It has fairly good overall output for a keychain light, but the beam was not well focused and was somewhat cluttered. I've read another review where this was also the case, so it’s not just my unit. Someone mentioned the bulb can be repositioned using a soldering iron, but I don't have the time for that. I expect the thing to be aligned out of the package. Still, the light does a good job lighting objects up to 50 yards away with a broader beam than the Pelican Tracker 2AAA xenon (which has tremendous “throw” but a ‘pencil-thin’ beam). The Blast is also more compact than the Tracker and is more practical to put on a keychain.
However, these days LED’s are really the way to go for a keychain light unless you need a long-range beam (which the Blast lacks anyway). If you spend a few dollars more (and don't need a submersible flashlight), you can get something like the Streamlight Microstream, which uses a single AAA battery and is much smaller than the Blast but with more overall output – smoother, brighter and whiter. Like the Blast, its beam is good out to about 50 yards. Unlike the Blast (which is difficult to turn on with one hand because rotating the bezel takes some force), the Microstream has a “clickie” tail switch with a momentary-on function.
Although an LED light costs more initially, in the long run you can expect to save money on batteries and replacement lamp modules. Another big selling point of an LED light is that it tends to keep putting out white light even when the battery is close to depleted, whereas a xenon light’s beam typically starts turning orange and has markedly reduced output a lot sooner than that.
