I just purchase this light. It has an amazing beam. It shines more than 400 feet across my backyard. This size is good, too. It's not too big. In fact, it's hard to believe that so much light can come from such a small flashlight. Great service and fast shipping from BrightGuy, too.

I am going to revise my comments a bit. I have never had a way to measure the actual throw of this light. Last week (5/1/08) I attended a 32 hour exercise in an area of a neighboring county that was remote enough to offer total darkness. I did a couple of tests using tree lines and on site structures such as barns, corrals, etc...

After reading TB's comments and remembering our prior discussion I decided to use Google Earth to measure the distance of the areas I was lighting. Based upon those measurements and where I was standing at the time, the Super Tac was easily throwing 500 feet with plenty of head room to go. Obviously, this is totally dependent upon the accuracy of Google Earth's measuring tool.

I have to say that given this new information I am extremely satisfied with the performance of this light, especially given its modest price. I'd give it six stars if I could.

original review - I have to say that given this new information I am extremely satisfied with the performance of this light, especially given its modest price. I'd give it six stars if I could. Well, we can start by saying the shape of this light is "unique." Yes, the head is BIG, but inside of that head is the parabolic reflector that makes this light a great performer. It is designed for throw, plain and simple. If you need a light with a lot of side spill or for close work then this is not the light for you.

Fit and finish are good, but don't expect a SureFire feel to it. The lens is slightly recessed and should offer some protection. I'd have liked to have seen it recessed a but more given its size and composition. The reflector has a very nice finish and the lens did not have any visible defects. The tailcap does sport an O ring for protection against the elements.

When you remove the tailcap to install the batteries be aware that there is a warning notice inside that covers the proper use of 123A batteries. You may need needle nose pliers or tweezers to grab the warning and pull it out as mine was too far inside to grasp by hand.

Once the batteries are loaded, the light is surprisingly well balanced considering the size of the head. Switches are a very subjective item, so this is my opinion on that topic. The switch is a forward clicky with momentary capability. It seems to take just the right amount of effort to activate the momentary portion of the switch. It takes a firmer push to get to the audible "Click" that turns the light on or off. The tailcap does feature a quarter turn lockout.

Output is quite tightly focused with a dimmer side spill. Although intended for longer distances, it can be used at moderate distances as well. Be careful of short distance use as the reflected light will be very bright and will utterly destroy night vision. You do NOT want to look into the beam even in the daylight. I would not recommend "demonstrating" the light to anyone by shining it in their face. Overall, the beam and spill are very useable. There is just enough side spill to prevent the feeling of tunnelvision. I have not done any measured distance testing, but there is no doubt based upon my use that the Super Tac will easily reach 300 feet and probably a good bit more and still be useable at that distance. This makes it a good choice as a light to use when your normal beams do not quite get there and you do not want to break out the HID lantern. The tint on mine is very white and it seems to render colors quite well, although that might be simply due to the amount of light focused on one area.

Yes, there are lights with higher lumen ratings, but don't let that fool you. The reflector design makes the most out of that 135 lumens and will out throw most other lights. There are lights that will throw farther if pure distance is most important to you. To me, the Super Tac is perfect as once I get too far past 300 or 400 feet I am not going to be able to discern what I am looking at anyway simply due to the distance involved. At $70 the Super Tac is a bargain that provides a very useable long range beam with momentary capability. I also truly use my lights, so having a lifetime warranty from a well known company is important to me. Many of the Super Tac's competitors do not offer such a generous warranty.

The supplied holster secures the Super Tac well, although the snap closure can take some effort to open and close. The holster is equally large, and I suspect that when carrying the light in that manner some folks might think you are carrying a side arm of some type, so you might want to be prudent about where you choose to carry this light.
