The SureFire A2 Aviator flashlight features three LEDs surrounding a main Xenon lamp. The SureFire Aviator has digital current regulation circuitry and a two stage switch. The current regulation circuitry gives you a consistent level of light output for the useable life of the batteries. The two stage switch on the SureFire A2 gives you a choice of either a low output LED or a high output Xenon beam.

To activate the SureFire A2 Aviator, press the tailcap switch (momentary on). Depressing the switch halfway activates the low output LEDs, depress the pushbutton completely to activate the high output Xenon lamp. The flashlight stays on as long as the pushbutton is depressed. For constant on just twist the pushbutton clockwise until the LEDs activate continue rotating to activate the high output beam (in conjunction with the LEDs). The SureFire A2 Aviator tactical flashlight includes a lock out tail cap function - by rotating the tailcoat 360 degrees counter clockwise (from the momentary ON position). In the LED mode the SureFire A2 will run for 10 hours at high brightness (4 Lumens) plus another 10 hours of diminished brightness. You will then get another 10 hours of low level light.
Features of SureFire A2 Aviator Flashlight: - dual output LED/Xenon flashlight - high output Xenon surrounded by 3 low intensity LEDs - two stage tail switch - more powerful than a three D-cell flashlight - microprocessor control - over 20 hours of low beam runtime - aerospace grade aluminum body with military specification - hard anodized finish - runs on two high-energy lithium batteries with 10 yr shelf life (includes batteries) - O-ring sealed - optically coated Pyrex lens - made in USA - lifetime guarantee from SureFire

A. J. from Erie, PA gives it a 3.5 and says.. The SureFire A2 is a unique product in that it combines a regulated incandescant bulb for good throw and color rendition with LEDs for short to medium range flood.
Construction is typical SureFire consisting of a tough "o" ring sealed body. It sports a pocket clip and a lanyard attachment point.
Switching is accomplished through a twisty tailcap that also has a push button for momentary use. Yoyu can tighten the twisty to a point where you can only activate the LEDs with the push button. Go a litle farther and you can activate both the LEDs and the incandescant using the pushbutton momentary. Go a little further and the LEDs light and the incandescant is available by the momentary pushbutton. Twist the final distance and you activate both the LEDs and incandescant. Please note that you cannot operate the incandescant alone. The LEDs will always be lit with it. The tailcap can also be backed off to lockout both lamps and prevent the accidental draining of the batteries.
The LEDs (My model uses white) will produce a wide flood type beam that is surprisingly clean of artifacts. The LEDs are directly driven from the batteries so output will diminish somewhat as the batteries are drained of power. The LEDs will have a distinct blue tint to them that some people find objectionable. In real world use the tint is noticeable but they are still very useable. The white LEDs are the only ones that produce a flood type beam. All other LED colors will have more of a spot beam output and you can expect more artifacts within their beam.
The main lamp produces a slightly oval beam that offers both good throw and decent side spill. Since it is regulated it will not dim as with a normal incandescant. It will maintain its brightness for roughtly 50 minutes. Once the batteries are too weak to support the main beam it will simply turn off. You will, however, still have full use of the LEDs until the batteries are completely drained. You should be able to run the LEDs for several more hours.
One important note about the batteries. Use only quality name brand batteries in the A2. The regulation circuitry is very particular about its power input, and some generic batteries cannot supply enough power for proper operation. The regulation circuit also provides for a "soft start" for the incandescant lamp. It gradually increases power to prolong the lamp's life by preventing a sudden voltage surge through the lamp. This will not be noticeable to most people. I believe that the lamps are rated for about 20 hours, but most users report that they have exceeded that. The A2 does use a proprietary lamp design, but this is a good thing as the lamp and light are designed to work together to provide for both a nice beam and a long lamp life.
The A2 is not inexpensive. Battery life using the incandescant bulb is somewhat short. But what you get in return is outstanding flexibility from one easy to carry light. And since the LEDs operate even if the main lamp fails, you will never be left in the dark. The A2 is one light that must be experienced in order to appreciate it. I don't think you will be disappointed.
