The SureFire Kroma is a unique SureFire product. Most people expect blinding light from a SureFire flashlight. While the Kroma does feature a fairly bright main beam, it is marginal at best as a tactical light. The Kroma is actually an excellent low light performer.

The build quality of the Kroma is typical SureFire with a tough "o" ring sealed body sporting a second design pocket clip that is gentler to your clothes than earlier designs.

Switching is accomplished by a combination twisty and pushbutton tailcap that operates much like that of the L1. By rotation of the tailcap you can select everything from low beam by pushbutton only to full illumination of the selected low beam and main beam. The tailcap also provides for a lock out position as well.

The low beam color choice is selected by a rotating collar switch similar to that of the U2 except that the switch on the Kroma has detents. The detents allow the operator to positively select the proper low beam while the nlight is switched off. You may select from high blue, low blue, low white, low red, or high red. The selected low beam will always come on first and will remain lit even if you push or rotate for the white main beam.

The low colors are provided by eight red or blue 3mm LEDs that surround the white LED in a rather large (one inch) bezel. At VERY close range the colored LED produce a beam that is somewhat star shaped. But once you move about one foot away from anything what you get is a nice even and wide flood of red or blue light. Low red is bright enough to navigate familiar territory or perhaps slowly navigate unfamiliar territory. Red high makes navigation very easy. Personally, I find the blue LEDs too harsh for my taste, but that is a very subjective thing. The blue LEDs provide for a much brighter flood pattern than the red. Either color on low is an excellent for close up work.

Low white is a very tight beam. It is not suuitable for close up work as the beam is rather squarish and only about the size of a postage stamp at close distances. At about 1-2 feet the TIR optic starts to shape the beam into a tight spot that throws surprisingly far for about a one lumen total output. Useable throw is about 20-40 feet on low. Push or rotate farther for high white and you get what I feel is a gorgeous spot beam with a nice corona and just enough spill to make it very useable. It is not the super tight beam of the older TIR optics. SureFire rates high white at about 50 lumens and that looks to be about right. The TIR optic really makes good use of those lumens.

Runtime on the low colors is reasonable. The runtime on low white is also very good. With a runtime of only 1.5 hours on high you had better kep spare batteries handy. High white runtime is probably the one drawback to the Kroma. But.....If you think of it and use it as the low light performer that it truly is, then the low runtimes more than make up for a modest at best high runtime. High white will cut out suddenly or refuse to light once the batteries drop below the voltage required for regulation. Low white will still function and I believe it is still regulated. The colored LEDs will also still light, although I believe that they are direct driven. So as with the A2 you should never be left in the dark.

My overall opinion of the Kroma? It is one of my favorite lights. I give it five stars for outstanding low power performance and flexibility. It, along with a red X5 that I use as a battery vampire are the two lights that reside on my nightstand each and every night. Low red provides more than enough light for moving around the house without tripping over our two greyhounds and high white is always available for those things that go bump in the night or to try to chase off that pesky skunk that always seems to wander by at 3 AM. The important thing is that you recognize what the Kroma does well and decide whether it fits your needs and desires as it is very expensive. In return for that price I think you will be hard pressed to find a better low output performer or another light that provides anything close to the wide even flood of the colored LEDs.
