Constructed of aerospace grade aluminum with a rugged military specification hard-anodized finish, and powered by two lithium batteries (10-year shelf life), the SureFire L4 LumaMax flashlight features a five-watt LED (Light Emitting Diode) and the extended runtime typical of LED flashlights.
With a maximum light output of 100 lumens, the SureFire L4 is the first LED flashlight bright enough to qualify for tactical use. The SureFire L4 LumaMax is equipped with a new click-on/click-off tailcap pushbutton switch that gives the user the tactical advantage of momentary activation or the convenience of a constant-on CLICK switch in a single switch. The SureFire L4 LED flashlight also features digital current regulation circuitry to match the LED's current requirements with the battery's output to maintain a more consistent level of light output for the useable life of the batteries (as opposed to unregulated lights, which are subject to a steady decline in light intensity beginning shortly after activation).
SureFire L4 LumaMax LED flashlight produces 100 lumens of light output for over an hour and useful light for over four hours. SureFire provides realistic output and runtime specifications based on scientifically obtained measurements. Although any LED -- including those produced by SureFire -- can continue to produce negligible light output for over 100 hours, the amount of useful light produced is of a shorter duration.

The build quality of the L4 is all Surefire. Solidly built with a pocket clip and O ring protection at both the head and tailcap with SureFire's no nonesense warranty. Nothing more needs to be said about that.
Switching is done via a forward clicky with both momentary and lock out capabilities. The switch has a good feel and feedback during use, and the momentary function is easily access and maintained.
Output is in the form of a modest hot spot and wide bright spill. The L4 is all about flood lighting. It will throw a fair distance, but it really is designed for use as a wide area light.
The body of the L4 does help to dissipate the heat generated by the Lux V emitter, so the body will become noticeably warm during use. The head itself may become quite warm and carries a "hot surface" warning label.
The L4 will produce about 100 lumens of light for one hour before it falls out of regulation. That's aggressive as far as battery consumption, but there is a fairly long peiod of diminishing output that is still very useful and provides plenty of time to find replacement batteries before the light goes dark. My light has a nice white tint, but it should be noted that tints on the Lux V emitter are variable.
All in all, a very useful light backed by an excellent warranty that means you will never have to replace this light unless you want to.
