Boo surefire, I expect more from you. It seems to be well made except that the melted end of the head strap scraps against your forehead and you turn on and adjust brightness with one hand but have to adjust the angle with the other hand, big pain. Brightness is where it fails the most, you can get a princeton tec apex or a petzl myo xp for about 50 bucks less and they are twice as bright.

Saint Minimus Quick Review
Fit and Finish – The Saint Minimus does not quite look or feel like your typical SureFire at first glance, but it is a solid piece of equipment. It does have to attach to your head comfortably after all, so the lighter feel does have merit. The headband and light mounting are well built and comfortable, but comfort will be a very subjective item so I am not going to spend any more time on it. The lamp assembly itself is larger than you might expect but it is very lightweight and is even more comfortable because it does not protrude forward as many headlamps do.

The battery compartment opens and closes easily and is well sized for gloved hands. The switch is equally well sized. There is some initial resistance to movement when you start to move from the “off” position, but movement is very smooth after that. It is continuously variable and there is a detent at the mid way point. As you move back to the “off” position there is an audible click.

The angle adjustment is somewhat stiff. I found it easier to adjust the angle using the center portion of the lamp rather than using the battery compartment as an adjustment point. Once in place it holds its position well. The LED and the internal and external lenses are recessed into the housing, so the housing shape does affect the shape of the beam output at close range. It does not affect performance at distance. Cleaning may be a bit more difficult because of the recess, but that same recess also provides a fair amount of protection to the lens.

So what about the beam itself? If you have to have the perfect beam, especially at this price, then stop reading here and look at another headlamp. You will not be satisfied. The balance of you should read on because the final sum of all things is not that bad.

The outline of the emitter is visible in the center of the beam at close range. The beam tint itself is white to slightly blue at the center and transitions to a yellow as you move towards the edge of the beam. There is an outer ring or two and some artifacts way out in the peripheral vision area. So, at close range, you might call the beam ugly. The beam’s shape is what I would call forward focused flood. It I not a pure even flood as with a different manufacturer. It is a narrower forward focused flood that I like better because it puts more light exactly where you are looking. Why do I find that important? Because I can actually use this light on its lowest setting and move about a crowded area with ease. I cannot do that with the closest competitor because their beam is spread out so far I have to use medium or high power to get enough light in front of me. Thus you should be able to use a much lower power setting on the Minimus and still get more throw out of it as well. My basement is 50 feet long and the Minimus easily illuminates the far wall at high power and does quite well right down to mid range.

In actual use the beam quality is not that bad. You may notice the center shadow or the outer rings just a bit. Those strange peripheral artifacts really do not show up all that much in actual use unless you are running high power. They are more noticeable then but really do not bother me. I also wear glasses and the beam does manage to create a very minimal amount of glare. Here again I do not find it all that objectionable and I am fairly critical about such things. You can actually read a document with relative ease despite the beam’s irregularities.

Overall, I like the Minimus . It is comfortable to wear and well built. It is also a comfortable compromise between long throw and pure flood. If you use the minimal amount of power needed for the job battery life should be very good to excellent. SureFire’s lifetime warranty provides all of the product protection you could ask for. I would give the Minimus five stars but I feel I do have to detract from the score a bit due to the shadows and rings in the beam.
